Sr. Rita (Roserita) Walker OP
COLUMBUS: Dominican Sister of Peace Sr. Rita (Roserita) Walker, OP, died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH, on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. She was born in Somerset, OH, on October 5, 1923.
Sr. Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Daniel and Audrey (Kinsel) Walker.
She entered the Novitiate of the former Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1941 and made her Profession of Vows in 1943.
Sr. Rita earned a BS from the College of St. Mary of the Springs (now Ohio Dominican University) and an MA from Duquesne University. She ministered in the Columbus Diocese at Sacred Heart, Coshocton (1957-58); Newark Catholic, Newark (1964-67); Watterson High School, Columbus (1969-78); Fisher Catholic, Lancaster (1978-88); and St. Mark Parish, Lancaster (1988-99).
She also taught at other schools in Ohio and in Michigan, New Mexico, New York, and Pennsylvania. After retirement, Sr. Rita continued minister in Lancaster doing prison ministry and bible study until 2010. She was a resident volunteer at the Columbus Motherhouse and an avid quilt maker before entering Mohun Health Care Center in 2010.
Sr. Rita is survived by her brothers, Phil of Lancaster and Martin of Columbus; and by a sister, Charlotte Woodyard of Columbus; as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Reception of the Body will take place at the Columbus Motherhouse on Friday, October 5, at 3pm. Evening Prayer of Office for the Dead will be held at 4:45pm with viewing continuing until 7pm.
The funeral liturgy will be on Saturday, October 6, at 9am followed by burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
