Barbara Jean Reed
LANCASTER: Barbara Jean Reed, age 91, of Lancaster, was born May 6, 1922 in McConnelsville, Ohio and died on July 31, 2013 at her residence.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Forest and Gladys (Stebbins) Reed; aunts, Glenna Scott and Grace Timms; cousins, Audrey Dillon and Ardith Berwanger; and best friends, Margaret Ann Hoy and Hannah Thrash.
She is survived by first cousins, Robert Berwanger, John Dillon; and second cousins, Christy Burmeister, Robert Berwanger, Jr., Melissa Travis, Cindy Ordes, Linda Pritchard, Thomas Pritchard; and Reed cousins. Special friends, Mark Hull, Karen Heath, Olive Woodward, Veneta Tropp, Judi Schullery, Martha Sullivan, Beverly and David Bogear, Susie and Hobart Griset, and Karen Purcell; and her dearly loved cat, Callie.
Miss Reed retired as Acting Assistant Director of the Vocational Home Economics Section of the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) in 1986. She retired with 46 years in the field of home economics education. Her first teaching experience started at McConnelsville High School in Morgan County and then she taught 13 years at Lancaster City Schools before being recruited by ODE where she worked 25 years. She was recognized for her outstanding teaching abilities, leadership and teamwork skills, organizational and public speaking abilities, intelligent thought patterns and persuasive personality traits. While at the Department of Education, she planned and conducted the first Ohio Statewide Home Economics Teachers' Conference, spoke at the White House Conference for National Home Economics Supervisors' Assn., evaluated classroom teachers throughout the state, and was recognized as a true leader by those who came in contact with her.
She received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Home Economics Education from Ohio University, Athens, graduating with honors. She was a member of the OU Honorary Society of Phi Upsilon Omicron and Emeritus Society. Her high school graduation took place at McConnelsville High School where she was valedictorian of the Class of 1940.
Barbara was involved in the community through her volunteer work at the Georgian, General Sherman House, and Meals on Wheel. She had been a 60+year member of the First United Methodist Church, Lancaster where she served on the financial committee and was a member of the Elizabeth Circle & Sisters; 50+ year member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society; Fairfield Heritage Assn. and 25+ member of the Fairfield Co. Retired Teachers Assn.
Barbara enjoyed ballroom dancing having competed at numerous levels. She was the only student in the Central Ohio Fred Astaire Dance Studio history to have achieved two bronze awards.
Barbara will be remembered by family, friends, students and neighbors for her graciousness, giving and caring ways, mentoring skills, kindness of spirit, honesty, upbeat personality and love of life.
Celebrate her life by attending services at the Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home, 436 N. Broad St., Lancaster. Calling hours 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, August 3rd. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 4th with Pastor Cheryl Foulk officiating. Private burial services will to take place McConnelsville Cemetery in Morgan County at the convenience of the family.
