Samuel Barney

LANCASTER: Samuel (Bornino) Barney, 80, of Lancaster, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2010 at Pickering House.
He was born December 26, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Leonard and Edith Bornino. Sam was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, The American Legion Post #11, Black Cats and Eagles Aerie #212. He retired from the United States Air Force and United States Marine Corps, serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He received numerous combat medals and decorations while he served 12 years in the Marine Corps and 16 years in the Air Force. Sam is a former Service-Safety Director for the City of Lancaster. He also served as Director and Board Member of Ohio Veterans Home. Sam is a past Commander of the Department of Ohio American Legion and has served the Department of Ohio as First and Second Vice-Commander, National Executive Committeeman, Department Assistant Sergeant-At-Arms, 8th District Commander, State Legislative Chairman, National Legislative Council, National American Legion Magazine Commission, National Sergeant-At-Arms and National Vice-Commander.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Robertson Barney; sons, David (Kathy) Bornino, Michael (Mary) Barney all of Lancaster; daughter, Dr. Linda Barney (Janet Zak) of Dayton, step daughters, Michele (James) Doran of New Albany, Melissa (Bradley) Jester of Dublin, Melinda (Shawn) Hazlett of Powell; brothers, Ronald (Angie) Bornino of Bedford, Leonard (Terry) Bornino of Cleveland, sister, Jeanette Toth of Cleveland; grandchildren, Brian (Andrea) Bornino, Anthony Bornino, Benjamin Bornino, Tiffany (Keith) Whaley; step grandchildren, Megan and Renee Doran, Zachery and Benjamin Hazlett, Tyler and Trent Jester; great grandchildren, Dominick Barney, Jason and Samuel Whaley; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gina Romano Barney; parents; and sister, Margaret Solar.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at the St. Mary of the Assumption Church with Father Donald E. Franks as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Monday, August 23 from 3-8 p.m. at the HALTEMAN-FETT-DYER FUNERAL HOME.
