Charles William Sterling

SPRINGFIELD: Charles William Sterling, 94, passed away at Springfield Masonic Home on Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

He was born May 4, 1918 in Fairfield County near Rockmill, Ohio to the late Russell and Edith Taes Sterling. Charles grew up in the Carroll area, beginning his education in a one room schoolhouse and eventually graduating from the Lancaster High School, Class of 1936. He married Bernice Alspach on June 14, 1941. They raised three children in Sugar Grove, Ohio.

Charles was in the Civil Conservation Corps in the late 30's and early 40's. He worked as a factory worker at North American Aviation and Chrysler, from where he retired. He was a Protestant by faith. Charles was a Mason 32nd degree at St John's Lodge #13, spending his last years at Springfield Masonic Home.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Bernice Alspach Sterling Roshon, and Freda Sterling; son, Charley Sterling; grandson, Lance Sterling; and sister Marguerite Haffey.

He is survived by his son Jim (Brenda) Sterling, Murfreesboro, Tennessee; daughter, Sharon (Richard) Welch, Lancaster; his four grandchildren, Natalie and Robert Welch, Lancaster, Cheryl (Mark) Sterling Hollingshead, Karen (Jimmy) Sterling Tindall, both of Murfressboro, Tennessee; he is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Brandy Baucom, Michael Boner, Heather and Alexis Tindall and Ben Jacob, Schuyler and Irish Sterling; also survived by special niece Judy (Jay) Jackson of Springfield, niece Nancy (Larry) Pryor, Indianapolis; and nephews David (Debbie) Haffey of Beaver Creek, Ohio and Dan (Rachel) Haffey of Walkersville, Maryland.

Charles was an outgoing person who never met a stranger. He loved talking about the olden days with a sharp memory even in his 90's. He loved the Fairfield County Fair, last attending in October 2011 at the age of 93.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday October 6, 2012 following Masonic services, with Pastor Jay Jackson officiating, at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton OH. Friends may call 1 pm-2 pm prior to the service. Caring cremation will take place after the service.
