Donald Dowell

LANCASTER: Donald L. Dowell, 89, of Lancaster died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Fairfield Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1923 to the late Dwight and Olive Dowell. He served honorably during WWII under General Patton's 3rd Army in the 90th Infantry Division, the 345th Field Artillery Battalion and engaged in the D-Day invasion on Utah Beach. He was a long time Fairfield County and State Employee of the Welfare Department where he served as Director then retired in 1986. Donald served on various State and County Boards namely the State Welfare Director Association. Donald belonged to the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, he was instrumental in establishing the Vision Center in Fairfield County and had been a volunteer at Fairfield Medical Center for over 14 years. He was also a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.

Donald is survived by his children: Greg Dowell, Deborah (Rick) Stemble, Julie (Andy) Ogilvie; grandchildren: Philip Stemble,

Alyson (Brian) Gibson, Sara (Chris) Boyden, Adam (Nicole) Peters; great- grandchildren: Austin, Bayleigh, Korbyn, Cabot, Grace, Andrew, Sophia, Izabel, and Zane.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 61 years, Anita; brothers, Robert and Russell Dowell, and son-in-law Steve Evans.

Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Church with Fr. Craig Eilerman as Celebrant. Burial to follow at St. Mary Cemetery with military graveside honors. Friends may visit at SHERIDAN FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, January 16 from 3-9:00 PM with vigil service at 8:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Church or St. Mary School.
