LITHOPOLIS: Gerald Barnhart Smith, age 89, of Lithopolis, Ohio, died Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
Born September 25, 1923 in Canal Winchester, Ohio to the late Roy Edwin & Hazel Marie (Barnhart) Smith, he was a 1941 graduate of Canal Winchester High School and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was retired from Anchor Hocking and Kroger, and was a retired farmer. He was a member of American Legion Post #677, the Farm Bureau, Ohio LST Association (Navy), and Peace Free Lutheran Church. Last year he was honored in the Grand Marshall group of the Canal Winchester Labor Day Parade.
Survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty (Manson) Smith; children, Stephen Gerald Smith, Johnstown, Susan Jane (Mick) Kistler, Canal Winchester; grandchildren, Lori Ann (Eric) Schmid, Lewis Center, Wendy Sue (Brenton Austin) Lynch, Amy Lynn (Justin) Homan, both of Canal Winchester, Katie Marie Smith, Columbus, Mikala Renea Smith, Johnstown, Jeffrey Wayne (Christy) Hunter, Canal Winchester; step-grandson, Scott Eugene (Karen) Kistler, Lakeland, Florida; nine great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Hite, Marion, Ohio, and Dorothy Nolan, Canal Winchester; sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Smith; nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by brother, Carl Leroy Smith.
Friends may visit 2-4 & 6-8 pm Thursday, February 7 at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester. Funeral service will be held 10:30 am Friday, February 8 at Peace Free Lutheran Church, 28 Elm Street, Canal Winchester. Interment will follow at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens.
