LANCASTER: John W. Rife, 100, of Lancaster, Ohio left his earthly body behind and went to his heavenly reward on August 5, 2013. He was born May 11, 1913 in Cheshire, Ohio. John was a member of the Lancaster United Brethren in Christ Church . During World War II John served with the 20th Air Force, 30th Squadron, 19th Bomb Group, 115th Wing. John spent his working years with the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad. He also worked as a contractor throughout Fairfield County. Driving throughout Lancaster, his work can be found on nearly every street. His retirement years were spent traveling throughout the United States, wintering in Arizona and California.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helen (Kovach) Rife, daughter Sharma (Vincent) DeNeui of Denver, Colorado and son John II (Anne-Marie) of Shepperton, England; grandchildren John III (Lauren) and Max (friend Sarah McKeown) of London, England; and great-grandson John IV, also of London, England; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chauncey and Elva (Scott) Rife, sisters Natilda Kelton and Anna Williams, and brothers Clarence and Ellsworth. The family would like to thank the staff of Home Helpers and FairHoPe Hospice.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Lancaster United Brethren in Christ Church with Rev. Henry Cadwell officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Rose Cemetery. Friends may visit from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home.
