Bates, Shirley C.  
BATES, Shirley Carol December 28, 1934- August 22, 2015 Shirley passed away peacefully under the loving care of family and the North Shore Hospice staff. She will be greatly missed by her children Nancy (Fereydoun), David (Ann) and Alison (Martin) as well as her six grandchildren - Heather, Graeme, Leila, Cyrus, Owen and Reid. Shirley is also survived by her sister Margaret St. John. She was predeceased by her husband George Bates in 2009, her brothers Douglas and Lawrence McGrath and her parents, Ivy and Fred McGrath. Shirley was born and raised in New Westminster BC and graduated from T.J. Trapp Technical High School in 1951. She married George Bates in 1960 and they settled and raised their family on the North Shore. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed baking, jam making, quilting, entertaining, gardening and walking the West Van seawall. She loved going to craft fairs and made every holiday a special occasion. She was a kind, generous, caring person who was a gentle friend and warm neighbor to many and an animal lover her whole life. She most recently resided at the Westerleigh in West Vancouver with her cat, Molly, and met many new friends there. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at North Shore Hospice, the wonderful home care nurses and home support workers and all of the friends and neighbors who helped us through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the North Shore Hospice Society. Celebration of life to be held Friday, September 11th, 2 :00pm at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd, North Vancouver

Earl, Larry R.  
Larry passed away suddenly, at home in Burnaby, B.C., on Saturday, August 22, 2015, in his 65th year. Dearly loved son of Orma Earl (née Acres) of Winchester, Ontario. Predeceased by his father, Raymond Earl, and his sister Wendy. Survived by his brother-in-law Peter Kemp, nephew Jeffrey Kemp, niece Alison Kemp, uncle Keith Acres, and many cousins and friends. Born in Winchester, Ontario, Larry graduated from North Dundas District High School in 1969. He attended Carleton University, and then worked for Bell Canada in Ottawa, Microtel in Calgary and Lloydminster, Alberta, before being transferred to Vancouver, and in recent years has been self-employed. Memorial services will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 120 Tenth St., New Westminster, B.C., on Saturday, September 5, 2015, at 3:00 p.m., and in Winchester, Ontario, on Saturday, September 12, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Burnaby Hospital Foundation - Mental Health www.bhfoundation.ca or to a charity of your choice.

HILLIS, Susan Margaret 1953 - 2015 Susan passed Away peacefully at home August 18th. She had suffered for a number of years with the complications of diabetes. Her passing ended a long battle fought without complaint. She kept a brave face and always had a positive outlook for her many friends, family and acquaintances. All those who loved and respected Sue's tenacity and many craft talents will miss her very much. Susan's son Damian and husband Geordie will morn the loss of her love. We would like to remind everyone to hug their loved ones lots, as you never know when they will not be there. There will be a celebration of life for family and friends the 3rd of September.

KOSKO, Tony November 30, 1928 - August 25, 2015 Born in Narda, Hungary (Croation Community) Tony came to Canada in 1948 and worked with his father on CP Rail for 5 years. He moved on to small businesses settling in Coquitlam in 1962. He started up Tarmac Asphalt and Villa Builders. (Land Development) Tony pioneered building the first inground swimming pool in Coquitlam (Colton Ave). In his retirement he loved his elaborate garden, cooking and traveling south. He leaves his wife Cherrie of 54 years; his son Rick Kosko; daughter Lisa Kosko; son-in-law Dwayne Hinch; his grandchildren Dawson Kosko, Ciera Kosko and his cat Mutsany. He will be so missed by his family.

LOPEZ, Marguerite Ann January 18, 1953 - August 28, 2015 . passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. Loving wife, mom, grandma, sister and friend, she will be missed more than words can describe. Her contagious energy and spirit for life will never be forgotten. Her life was filled with joy, laughter and family, exactly as she wanted. Not one day will go by that we will not miss her, think of her and cherish the moments shared. She is survived by her husband Richard (of 42 years), children Jeremy, Ryan (Crystal) and Kimberly (Jerad) and her grandchildren Ava, Ciera and Nya. A celebration of life will be held at South Delta Baptist Church on Friday, September 4th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Society. She gave more than she took.

Shafer, Michael Frank  
SHAFER, Michael Frank February 1, 1922 - August 20, 2015 Michael Frank Shafer, long-time resident of Ladner and Mayne Island, died on August 20 at the age of 93. Dad was born in Chatham, Ontario and lived there until he joined the army on the day before his 18th birthday. When he returned to Canada in 1945 he met his future wife, Evelyn Marie Rosling. They were married in London, Ontario on October 30, 1945. In 1946, Mum and Dad moved to Ladner and raised their family there until 1979 when they retired to Mayne Island. Predeceased by our Mum in 1998 and our sister Diane in 2014. Survived by daughters Margaret, Marilyn and sons Rick, John and Gerry. Dad is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. "I am ready to meet my maker. Whether my maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter." - Sir Winston Churchill (1949) Rest peacefully Dad. A family service will be held on Mayne Island.
