Died peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning in Abbotsford, B.C. after a long illness.

Carroll sought friendship, self-knowledge and spiritual enlightenment throughout her life. She took joy in connecting with others, especially friends, family, patients, co-workers and neighbours.

Camping, hiking, sailing and cross-country skiing that were part of her pursuit of a whole and balanced life gave way in later years to regular walks along the West Vancouver seawall.

Membership in the North Shore Unitarian Church was a source of comfort and friendship. Her time as a grandmother was an important and satisfying part of her journey.

Born in Regina, Ruth Carroll McLeod grew up in Winnipeg with younger sister Anne and parents Elsie (Curtis) and Albert Leonard 'Mac' McLeod.

Carroll married Gunnar Eggertson, a lawyer, at First Lutheran Church in Winnipeg in December 1953. After several years in Alberta and Winnipeg, the couple, with children Colleen, Maja and Eric, moved to West Vancouver in 1968.

A devoted gardener, Carroll used her eye for design to make her family's home beautiful. It was a welcoming place for friends, visitors and relatives, especially her parents and her sister's family from Crescent Beach.

She resumed work as a registered nurse in the 1970s, doing a stint at the UBC Hospital before ending her career helping seniors at Kiwanis Lodge in West Vancouver. She and Gunnar divorced in 1983.

Carroll put her faith, finances and energy into helping found the Quayside Village co-housing development in the Lower Lonsdale area. She played an active role from its opening in 1998 until she suffered a major stroke in 2004.

In 2005, Carroll moved into extended care at the Dr. Stuart Pavilion at Mission Hospital, close to Maja's household. The family is grateful to Dr. Patel and the staff at the Dr. Stuart Pavilion for their loving care.

Predeceased by her ex-husband, parents and aunts and uncles, Carroll is survived by: children Colleen (Richard Gray) of Calgary, Maja Malks (Aaron) of Mission, and Eric (Kelley Jo Burke) of Regina; grandchildren Maja and Lennie Eggertson Gray, Lara Malks-Jjumba (Anthony Jjumba), Avrom Malks (Lauren), and Sarah Malks, Jessica and Sam Eggertson and Finn Burke Eggertson; great-grandchildren Mukisa Malks-Jjumba and Aurelia Malks; sister Anne McLeod (Len Bonn) and Anne's sons David Fast (and son Remy) and Ben Fast (Andrea and children Katrina and Eric); cousin David Baar (Geri Aughton) of Maui and many nieces, nephews and other relations on the Eggertson side of the family.

Memorial service at 10 a.m., Sat., June 16, 2012 at North Shore Unitarian Church, 370 Mathers Ave., West Vancouver (off Hadden Drive). In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the B.C. Children's Hospital or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
