Bert Baker was born on August 29th, 1925 on Vancouver Island to parents Beatrice and Jeffreys Baker. Beatrice was a pianist and Jeffreys was a sailor who became a sea captain and sailed to many different countries over his lifetime. Bert was their only child. The family moved to into downtown Vancouver and lived on a houseboat then in 1939 the family bought a piece of property in West Vancouver on the waterfront and built a home.
One of Bert first jobs was to pack supplies to the small store up Hollyburn Mountain. He was paid $.05 a pound. He could pack 40 - 50 pounds and do two - four trips a day. He then worked his way up in the automobile industry and eventually worked for Arrow Transfer Co Ltd, for many years, managing the Mining Department installing heavy equipment in mines around BC and the Yukon.
Bert met Jacqueline Mary Smith in 1943 from their mutual love for the outdoors, hiking and skiing. They were married on November 10th, 1946. They built a home in West Vancouver in 1958 and raised three children. They maintained a cabin on Hollyburn Mountain, a cabin on the north arm of Quesnel Lake and a cabin in Pender Harbour. Life was full of recreation, hard work, family and friends.
Bert leaves behind three children, Katherine Nancy Baker (Carl), Patricia Anne Baker (Peter) and Thomas Jeffreys Baker (Karen) as well as eight grandchildren, Charlotte Hinkson (Tim), Jeremy Baker (Tara), Erica Williamson (Stuart), Elizabeth Hubert, Simon Williamson, Kyle Baker, Casey Baker, Chelsie Baker and one great grandchild Audrey Hinkson. Bert was predeceased by Jacqueline Mary Baker who died on February 18th, 1999.
There will be a celebration of Bert Bakers life on BC Day, August 6th, 2012 from 2 - 4pm at his home. The family invites all friends and neighbours to come and celebrate. Any donations in honour of Bert's life can be sent to the Hollyburn Mountain Society.
