Emily (Cudd) Creal


Emily Cudd Creal, 96, died at her home in Spartanburg on May 13, 2014.
Born June 20, 1917, in Spartanburg, she was the youngest child of the late Dr. Alonzo D. Cudd and Corrie Smith Cudd. She was the widow of James Crady Creal, an attorney and Hodgenville native.
She graduated from Spartanburg High School and Westhampton College in Richmond, Virginia, and became a city circuit school teacher in Spartanburg where she moved from school to school to relieve the principals. During World War II she worked in the local USO and met her husband when he was stationed at Camp Croft. Their wartime romance led to their marriage on March 9, 1943.
When her husband finished law school in Kentucky he worked as an assistant in the Kentucky Department of Insurance and lived in Hodgenville and Frankfort before the couple moved to Spartanburg. There Emily was involved in many clubs and organizations, including the DAR, UDC, the Cema Chreitzberg Garden Club and a book club. She was a PEO and a longtime member of First Baptist Church.
Emily loved beach vacations, travels around the world, reading, cooking and dancing. She was a devoted mother. In her later years, she had a number of health issues, but bore them with grace and good humor. She read her Bible many times. She was especially fond of cats.
Emily is survived by her daughter Carolyn; her son Jim; and numerous nieces and nephews including Celia C. McDonald of Hodgenville.
Emily was pre-deceased by her sister Sarah Cudd Gaskins; and her brother A.D. Cudd Jr.
The funeral was Monday in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church and was conducted by Dr. Kirk H. Neely. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends at their home following the committal.
