John Ulibarri, 48, a resident of Las Vegas passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, following an extended illness.
He is preceded in death by his father, Gene Ulibarri; maternal grandparents, Herlinda and Juan Chavez; paternal grandmother, Eva Roybal Ulibarri; stepfather, John Paul Montenegro; and a brother-in-law, Leon Ortega.
He is survived by his sons, Johnryan of Las Vegas, and Jeffrey Ulibarri of Albuquerque; mother, Judy E. Chavez of Las Vegas; two sisters, Julianna Ortega and Lydia Ulibarri of Las Vegas; brothers, Joseph Edward and Kelly of Los Angeles, Calif. and Lucas Ulibarri of Las Vegas; aunts, Elaine Chavez of Albuquerque, Esther Monk and husband, Richie of Los Angeles, Calif., Christine Lopez and husband, Pete and Lora Montenegro, all of Las Vegas; nieces, Kathryn ""Kit"" and Jordan Edward of Los Angeles, Calif., and Dominique Ortega of Las Vegas; nephews, Hunter Edward of Los Angeles, Calif. and Santiago Ortega of Las Vegas. He is also survived by cousins, Elisha Salinas and husband. Art and their children, Sean and Kylie of Albuquerque; Karla Cruz and husband, Adrian and children, David, Zaiden and baby; Pablo Monk and wife of Taiwan, Phillip Monk and wife, Glenna and their children, Natalia and Nicasio of Los Angeles, Calif., Erica Monk of Honolulu, Hawaii, Kirsten Roberts and husband, Nathan of Idaho and their children Vincent and Ethan; John Lopez and wife, Margaret and their daughter, Daisy of Santa Fe, and Peter Lopez and wife, Nicole and their children, Noah and Hayden of Los Angeles, Calif. He is also survived by numerous friends and family members.
John was born in Las Vegas on Oct. 3, 1965. He enjoyed arts and crafts, fishing, hunting, and riding his bike and cooking. He made the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies in the world. He graduated from West Las Vegas High School in 1983 and went on to attend college at New Mexico State University and New Mexico Highlands University. He served as a Seabee in the United States Navy
. John was always willing to help anyone he could and loved being outdoors.
On Aug. 8, 2013, he sustained a serious head injury and had been trying to recover ever since.
A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today (Friday) in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations. All services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary at 7 p.m. Friday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 Saturday morning. The interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers will be: Johnryan Ulibarri, Kelly Willis, Phillip Monk, and Adrian Cruz.
