Katarina Montoya(1919 - 2013)

Katarina Montoya, 94, a long-time resident of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.

She was born in Taos on Feb. 10, 1919.

She married Filemon Montoya on Dec. 30, 1939, in Taos and the family moved to Las Vegas in 1952.

She worked as a bookkeeper in private business and state government. Katie was an avid gardener and enjoyed arts and crafts.

She is survived by her daughter, Roberta Weahkee; sons, Fernando, Ron and wife Grace, Donald and daughter-in-law Pita; grandchildren, Jackie Moore and Larry, Darlene Trujillo and Gene, Celestina Antrillo and Nick, Carlos Montoya and Lori, Deborah Mora and Ray, Ronald David Montoya and Therese, Adrian Montoya, Louella Russell and Lee, Rodina Lucero, Monica Montoya and Alberto, Anita MacAuley and Marvin, Krista Shepard, and Geoffrey Shepard. She is also survived by 31 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren.

Katarina was preceded in death by her husband, Filemon Montoya,; daughter, Rosella Shepard; son, Albert Montoya; grandsons, Samuel Montoya and Robert James Weahkee; and daughter-in-law, Martha Baca-Montoya.

Rosary services will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Nelson Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Las Vegas with the following serving as casket bearers: Ronald David Montoya, Alberto Lopez, Estevan Gonzales, Robert Gonzales, Geoffrey Shepard and Charles Montoya. Serving as honorary bearers will be all her grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Vida Encantada nursing home for the care Katarina received while a resident at the facility.
