Rafael Manuel Benavidez, 83, a resident of Las Vegas, passed away on Thursday following a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gonzalo and Eloisa Benavidez; his wife, Sabina Gonzales Benavidez; two brothers, Fidel and Casey Benavidez; and a nephew, David Aragon.
He is survived by four daughters, Angie Valdez and husband, Joe of Garden City, Kan., Mary Ann Aragon of Pecos, Lorraine Romero and husband, Adolfo and Theresa Benavidez and companion, Ray Romero, all of Las Vegas; one son, Ralph Benavidez and companion, Corine Valdez of Garden City, Kan.; one brother, Teo Benavidez of Las Vegas; five sisters, Rose Salazar and husband, Johnny of Las Vegas, Helen Vargas and husband, Geraldo of Romeroville, Clorinda Romero and husband, Rosendo, Lena Flores and husband Paul, and Jessie Archuleta, all of Las Vegas; 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Rafael was born in Sheridan on May 11, 1930. He worked for the AT&SF Railway Company laying track and his hobbies were fishing, hunting, camping and playing with grandkids and his harmonica. He loved to dance and spent time at the senior citizens center and took long walks.
A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. today (Monday) in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday in the chapel.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday from Our Lady of Sorrows Church. The interment will follow in the Catholic Cemetery in La Manga with the following serving as casket bearers: Manuel Valdez, J. R. Aragon, Orlando Romero, Bryan Romero, Ismael Gonzales, and Ralph Benavidez Jr.
