Catherine B. Salazar passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 29, 2013, at her home in Ribera.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born Mary Catherine in Chelsea, Mich., to Mary Ellen Conklin and George Albert Bockres on July 23, 1915, she was 98 years old.
After her father's death when she was 15, and graduating from Catholic high school in 1933, she attended Cleary Business College for two years. She left after earning an Associate's degree, to help her mother support their household. She worked in a bakery, then for the King Seeley Corporation, where she met her future husband, Clifford J. Mahlke. They were married July 2, 1938, and had a daughter, the late Sue (Mahlke) Lucksted, who they raised in Ann Arbor, Mich. Catherine later worked as a switchboard operator and medical secretary at the University of Michigan.
After retiring to Florida in the late 1970s and Cliff's death in 1983, Catherine visited Sue in New Mexico and eventually moved to El Ancon.
She attended San Miguel del Vado in Ribera, where she was active in the choir and other activities, and where she met her second husband, (Jose) Armando Salazar. They were married at San Miguel's on May 7, 1994, and enjoyed 13 years together until Armando's death in 2007. Catherine loved being embraced by the extended Salazar/Garcia family.
Known for her open heart, generosity, deep faith, and quick wit and memory, Catherine will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
She is survived by her grandson, Christopher Lucksted; daughter-in-law, Vera and great-grand-children, Parker and Mia; her granddaughter, Alicia Lucksted; beloved family, Chris and Irene Garcia, Isaac and Marie Salazar, and Gerald and Perta Salazar and their children and extended families; her sisters-in-law, Victoria (Vicki) Mascarenas, Alice Sikkink, and Rose Herrera; her cousin, Bonnie Delaney of Dexter, Mich. and many dear friends and neighbors.
The rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at San Miguel del Vado Parish in Ribera. It will be followed by Mass and burial at 11 a.m., also at San Miguel.
