Dr. Robert G. Gordon, 98, passed away April 10, 2014. He was a resident of Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebraska City, Neb. Robert moved to Nebraska from Washington, Iowa formally a resident of the UP Home, to be closer to family.

He was born in upper New York State, in 1916, to parents James Gordon and Isabel (Clark) Gordon. He moved with his parents and four brothers to Torrington Wyoming in 1922.
After graduating from high school he attended Monmouth College and graduated in 1938. He then attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine. After graduating in 1942 he spent a year of internship at Gorgas Hospital in the Panama Canal Zone. Upon returning to the United States in June of 1943, he married Violet Dahlberg, a graduate nurse of the Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. He joined the Naval Reserve in 1943 and was assigned as a medical officer on a destroyer escort vessel and served 18 months in the South Pacific. Upon returning to the mainland and was stationed at the naval training center near Livermore, Calif. for the duration of the war, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. From 1946 to 1964 he served as a medical missionary in the Sudan, Africa under the auspices of the United Presbyterian Church. In 1965, he became the director of Mora Valley Medical Unit in the Mora Valley. In 1972, he resigned from mission work and went into private practice in Clayton, retiring in 1983.
His wife preceded him in death in 1999 and is survived by daughters, Lisabeth (John) Szilagyi, Marcia Turner, Joyce (Bob) Thompson, Patricia (Merle) Guntz, and sons, Creigh, John (Susan), and Stuart (Nancy), 18 grandchildren and 22 great- grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Marshall Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City with Rev. Greg Bolt officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, Iowa. Visitations will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
