Antonio Marino Maes, 76, a lifetime resident of Cleveland, N.M., passed away on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018, at Alta Vista Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born to parents Andres D. Maes and Luianita Gallegos Maes, May 26, 1942 in Cleveland. A Catholic, and member of St. Gertrude Church in Mora, N.M., Antonio was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
He worked in the Grants mines for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and riding his motorcycle. He was a crew boss with the U.S. Forest Service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Andres and Luianita Maes, sisters MaryAnn LaPore and Ruth Maes, brother Andres Maes Jr., wife and mother of his children Francine Martinez Maes, son Duane Maes, grandson Michael Gregory Griego and son Peter Daniel Griego.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia M. Maes, of the family home in Cleveland; daughters and sons Iris Griego (Michael) of Las Vegas, N.M.; Dale Maes (Cora) of Cleveland, N.M.; Dion Maes of Chacon N.M.; Talena Maes (Spencer) of Las Vegas and Lily Martinez (Robbie) of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter-in-law Morella Padilla of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, sisters and brothers Julia Martinez (Emilio), Tina Maes (Dan) of Cleveland, Martha Ray (Charlie) of Colorado, Jenny Trujillo (Benito) of Holman, N.M., Johnny "Carelo" Maes (Betty) of Placitas, N.M., Benito Maes (Arlene) of Albuquerque, Michael Maes and Joaquin "Jackie" Maes of Encinal, N.M.; sister-in-law Clara Maes of Cleveland; brothers-in-law Jesse Mares (Patty) of Monte Aplanado; Don Mares of Las Vegas; Eddie Mares (Cathy) of Chacon; sisters-in-law Dora Maes of Colorado; Julia Lovato of Las Vegas, N.M.; Lucy Mares of Mora, N.M.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Rosary services will be recited on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018 at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, 10 a.m., with both services at St. Gertrude Church in Mora, with Father Paul Grala S.O.L.T. as celebrant.
Interment will follow at the Maes Family Cemetery in Tramperos, N.M. with the following serving as casket bearers: Dominic Branch, Joaquin "Jackie" Maes, Keith Griego, Don Maes, Dale Maes, and Gabriel Griego.
Serving as honorary bearers will be all of Antonio's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and Johnny Canelo Maes and Michael Maes.
