Carolyn Leger Simmons was born Feb. 6, 1936, in Las Vegas to Tony and Lyly Leger.

She passed away on May 14, 2013 in Phoenix, Ariz.

She attended Las Vegas schools. She was a delegate to New Mexico Girl's State in 1951. She graduated from New Mexico Highlands University in 1955 at age 19 and taught in elementary schools in New Mexico for three years. She moved to Arizona in
1959 and taught second grade for 31 years at Parker, Holbrook and Fowler schools.

She was a wonderful mother, a wonderful grandmother, a wonderful teacher and a wonderful wife.

She and her husband Thurman Simmons were married for more than 57 years. They had four children and she was especially proud that all four are college graduates: A son, Thad Simmons, and his wife Teri and their three children Sara, Kristen and Kyle; a daughter, Ann Simmons Clark and her husband Steve and their daughter Caitlin; a son, Thom; a daughter, Kay Simmons Zobrist and her husband Scott, and their sons Jake and Zachary. She is also survived by a brother, Philip (Kathy) Leger and a sister, Claudine (Billy) Leger-Martinez.

Carolyn loved to travel, both internationally and in their small plane. The small plane meant trips to see children and grandchildren, and to Baja, Calif., to see the grey whales with children and grandchildren.

Internationally she also traveled to Australia, Russia, Italy, England, France and Canada. She also made trips to Alaska, Hawaii and Guam. She was a lifelong devout Catholic and active member of Blessed Sacrament parish in Tolleson, Ariz.

A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Blessed Sacrament Church in Tolleson.
