Eugene 'Geno' Torres, 83, passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2018 at his home in Socorro, N.M.
He was born in Socorro on Nov. 13, 1934, to Miguel and Rufina (Gonzales) Torres. Geno was a graduate of Socorro High School, where he was active in Warrior football, basketball and baseball. Following graduation in 1954, he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country proudly for four years. Geno then earned a Bachelors degree in secondary education from New Mexico Highlands University and also attended Oberlin College in Ohio.
He served in the Peace Corps in the French-speaking west African country of Gabon from 1963-1965. Prior to beginning his thirty year career teaching French and English classes at West Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas, N.M., Geno also attended the University of Alaska for intensive post-graduate instruction in the French language.
For most of his adult life, Geno was an avid tennis player. After his retirement, he volunteered time helping coach the girl's tennis team at Robertson High School in Las Vegas. Geno was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marcella Archuleta; and brother, Abelino Torres. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Joan (Topinka) Torres; his son, Gene M. Torres and wife, Rebecca; daughter, Joni Torres and husband, Kevin Macaulay; grandsons, Caleb and Alan Torres; as well as many other relatives.
A Celebration of Geno's life will be held on Monday, Feb. 12, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Daniels Family Funeral Services' Socorro Chapel, 309 Garfield, Socorro, with Deacon Nick Keller officiating. A reception will be held at the DAV Building, 200 N. Fifth, Socorro, immediately following the chapel service.
Interment of Geno's cremated remains will take place at the Fort Bayard National Cemetery at a later date.
