Gary Lee McKinley, was called by our Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018.
Gary was truly an honest, loving individual, a great friend, husband, father and giving person. Everybody was his friend, and he was always the one who had another great ideal.
A native of Wakeene, Kan., and previously a resident of Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Denver, where he was employed by JC Penney's stores, Gary arrived in Las Vegas in the late 1970s to take over management of local JC Penney's store.
In 1982, he made a commitment to retire from JC Penney's and stay in Las Vegas, permanently, starting his own business. He then opened Taichert's Clothing Store, which he managed till 2004.
Gary was involved in many community activities, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and other like civic organizations.
He was a member of Rotary for 35-plus years and received many awards from that organization, along with one of Rotary's most prestigious honors: the Paul J. Harris Award.
He was a member of a Methodist Church, but would attend Christian services where he felt most comfortable on that particular day.
Gary loved going fishing, camping, water and snow skiing, singing and dancing to country music. He would always make accommodation to do what he loved.
Gary often said he loved the people of Las Vegas, indicating that they made him feel like one of them.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Karl McKinley and Leafy Lessor McKinley and brothers Don McKinley and Karl McKinley Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeannie McKinley, of the family home in Las Vegas; sons and daughters; Terry McKinley (Brenda) of Tennessee; Sherry Rice (Ray) of Kearney, Neb.; Mark McKinley (Joni) of Denver, Colo.; Johanna McKinley (Johnny) of Denver, Colo.; step-son: Nestor D. Gonzales of Rio Rancho, N.M.; brother: Keith McKinley (Jean) of Louisiana; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, father-in-law Horacio Martinez of Las Vegas; brothers-in-law Ed Martinez (Rita) of Chimayo, N.M.; Anthony Martinez (Dorothy) of Manuelitas, N.M.; Chris Martinez of Mora, N.M.; Elmer Martinez (Donna) of Las Vegas, N.M.; Leslie Martinez (Iris) of Santa Fe, N.M.; sisters in-law Jean McKinley of Phoenix, Ariz. and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018 at 10 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, 715 National Ave., Las Vegas, N.M., with Pastor Rosemary Pierson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the soup kitchen of the First United Methodist Church.
