Sister Helen Carney, OLVM, 83, a resident of Victory Noll, Huntington, Ind., died early Monday April 14, 2014, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Sister Helen entered the Congregation of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters on Oct. 27, 1949, and made first vows on Aug. 5, 1952. She served in the missions in Texas, Ohio, California and New Mexico. Sister Helen retired and returned to Victory Noll last October 2013, after spending nearly 50 years serving the people of New Mexico in many different parishes. Her last assignment was Villanueva where she served as Parish Life Coordinator.

Sister Helen was born in Royal Oak, Mich. on May 13, 1930 to Patrick Carney and Elodie Frappier Carney. Her parents, her brother, Raymond Carney and her sister Lydia Mae Carney precede her in death.

She is survived by her three sisters, Florence Smith of Arlington Hights, Ill., Sr. Alodia Carney, OLVM of Huntington, Ind., and Rose Mary Carney, OSF, Dubuque, Iowa. She is also survived by her Victory Noll sisters with whom she shared life and community with for 64 years.

A vigil service was held on Sunday with calling one hour prior to the service at the Victory Noll Memorial Chapel, 1900 W. Park Drive. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on today (Monday) with calling one hour prior to the Mass also at the Victory Noll Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at the Victory Noll Cemetery.

A memorial mass for Sister Elena Carney will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Villanueva.
