Helen G. Esquibel


Helen G. Esquibel, 84, a lifetime resident of Las Vegas was called home by her Lord Jesus Christ on Dec. 6, 2012 after a 13 year long battle with cancer.

A lifelong Catholic and member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish.

She was preceded in death by her father, Perfecto Gallegos; mother Eloisa Rivera Gallegos; her father and mother-in-law, Emilio Esquibel, Sr. and Libradita Tafoya Esquibel; her sister, Consuelo Martin; brother, Leo Gallegos; her brother-in-law, Robert Geoffrion; her sons, Larry Gillen and Michael Esquibel.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Emilio j. Esquibel and children, Lawrence E. Esquibel and wife Patricia, daughters Sylvia Gillen, Rita Sanchez and husband Billy.

She was also survived by numerous grandchildren, Melissa Barela and husband Joseph, Nicole Vallejos and husband Jacob, Jonathan Esquibel, David Esquibel, Allan Gillen and wife Cheri, Bruce Gillen and wife Andrea, Chris Gillen and wife Michelle, Billy Joe Sanchez and wife Liz, Cruzita Sanchez-Holguin and husband Conrad, Carmelita Fryar and husband Eric, Francisco Sanchez and sister Carmen Geoffrion.,Also 21 great-grand children and one great-great-grandson, multiple nephews and nieces and many friends.

Helen was raised and educated in Las Vegas. She studied with the Sisters of Loretto attending both Our Lady of Sorrows and Immaculate Conception High School later attending New Mexico Highlands University. She was employed as a sales clerk and soda clerk at Coque's Plaza Confectionary (now Plaza Drug), Delgado's Pharmacy, Leo's Pharmacy. She then worked for Sandoval's Studebaker Service and Parts. From there she went on to work for West Las Vegas Schools as a bookkeeper and School Lunch Director. She retired September 1986 from West Las Vegas Schools after 34 years.

The most important things in Helen's life were spending time with family and helping those in need. Helen was a woman of great faith, she was a passionate, committed friend and a respected mentor to many community leaders. The thing that Helen will always be remembered for is the love she had for what she called, " The Gem of the North-Las Vegas and the people of this community".

A viewing and visitation will be held all day Monday at Rogers Chapel. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday evening at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. A second rosary will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Our Lady of sorrows Church followed by The Rite of Christian Burial. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Jonathan and David Esquibel, Joseph Barela, Jacob Vallejos, Chris Gillen and Francisco Sanchez. Burial of cremains will take place at a later date at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
