José Tomas (Tom) Maes Jr., 76, "Mayo" as he was known to his family and close friends, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014.

He was born Nov. 7, 1937 to José Tomas Maes and Amalia Arellano in Holman.
Tom was a school teacher and educational administrator for many years. He retired as superintendent of Mapleton Public School District in Denver. He developed a strong faith that he continued to share, teach and inspire for many years beyond his career.
He will be remembered and appreciated for his teachings, his faith and his inspiration to everyone that knew him.
He is preceded in death by parents, José Tomas Maes and Amalia Arellano Maes; brother, Eli Romero; sister, Lila F. Candelario and nephew, Mario A. Maes.
He is survived by his wife, Ginnie Maes; his children, Yvette Whitley and husband, Rusty, Antoinette Maes and husband, Ben Buxton, Lisa Cruz and husband, Tarcisio; three grandsons; his wife's children, Julie Westfield and husband, Will, Stuart Lippa, Katie Stutz and husband, Andy and his wife's four grandchildren; his brothers, sisters and their spouses, Maria C. Esquibel and Anthony of Mora, Roque Maes and Fidelia of Sandia Park, Dolores Serna and Nick of Albuquerque, and Peter Maes and Diane of Sedillo Hill; sister-in-law, Dora Romero of California; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Pallbearers will be grandsons: John Tomas Whitley, Emilio Buxton, and Tristan Buxton.
Cremation has taken place and a rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. today (Monday) at St. Gertrude's in Mora. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday also at St. Gertrude's. A procession to the burial site will follow.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made in honor of José Tomas Maes Jr. to the Hermanos de La Morada de San José in Holman.
