Melita Larrañaga Ortega, 96, of Albuquerque, N.M., passed away peacefully on Aug. 20, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.
Melita was a member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church and was an active member in Baptist Churches in both Illinois and in New Mexico.
Melita, born in Las Vegas, N.M., graduated from Highland High School and attended Highlands University.
In March of 2018, she was awarded the first Honorary Bachelor's Degree from Highlands University.
Melita was a published author, writing "The Larrañaga Family History," "History of the Spanish Baptist Church of Las Vegas, N.M." and numerous other writings.
Melita was a member of the Hispanic Women's Council receiving, on the 50th Anniversary, one of three awards for Outstanding Woman of the Year for her years of service and contributions.
Melita's greatest accomplishments in life were marrying the love of her life, Ishmael Ortega, on July 18, 1941, and the birth of her four children.
Melita is preceded in death by her Loving husband of 65 years, Ishmael Ortega, and son Ronald K. Ortega.
She is survived by her sons LeRoy Ortega (Karen), and Greg Ortega (Debbie Gillespie); daughter, Pat Huskey (Ron); grandchildren Sonja Ortega, Cody Ortega, Christian Armijo (Frank), Brian Huskey (Mistelle), Kelly Ortega (Gregg), Trisha Wilcox (Curtis), Shannon Ortega- Gerdl (Tim) and Travis Huskey (Kacie); great-grandchildren Armando Ortega-Rodriguez, Ishmael Ortega, AJ Ortega, Tre Chavez, Patrick Chavez, Michael Huskey, Trinity Huskey, Colton Kincaid, Dylan Kincaid, Justin Wilcox, Kaila Wilcox, Braxton Gerdl, Layla Gerdl and baby Huskey; brother, Elfego Jaramillo; and many extended beloved family members and friends across the country.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, at Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 3100 Morris St. NE, Albuquerque, N.M., at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Melita's wish was to make donations to the Eastern Hills Baptist Church Youth Group at online under the giving tab. Designate in Honor of Melita Ortega for Youths.
