Robert F. Ortega, 76, a lifelong resident of Las Vegas passed away early Sunday morning March 17, 2013 at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, to be with the Lord.

Robert was a wonderful husband and father. He Liked having fun and going places. He loved sports but most of all basketball. He was a basketball player for New Mexico Highlands University in the 1960's and is the third all time leading scorer for Highlands.

He was an All American Honorable Mentioned basketball player by the Associated Press in New York for colleges and universities. He earned his Associates Degree from New Mexico Highlands University. He was a construction worker and electrical journeyman. He will be very sadly missed. But, he is in Heaven with the Lord and went to join his daughter Susan and sister Betty.

He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Susan Ortega; his sister, Betty Gomez; his parents, Felix Ortega and Mabel Duran Ortega; brother-in-law, Manuel Velarde; sister-in-law, Susanna Roybal; nephews, Lawrence Velarde and Leonard Velarde.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy Ortega of the family home; son, Donald Ortega of the family home; brother-in-lawa, Delano Velarde and Jimmy Velarde from Velarde, Eddie Gallegos from Albuquerque, Jose Roybal from San Pedro; sister-in-laws, Mary Gallegos and Frances Duran from Albuquerque; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Immaculate Conception Church on Wednesday beginning with a rosary at 9 a.m. with funeral mass immediately following with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Interment will follow at the family plot at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Las Vegas with the following serving as pallbearers: Gillie Duran, Eddie Gallegos, Danny Torres, Ray Torres, David Rudolph and Billy Tapia. Serving as honorary bearers will be all his remaining brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
