On Jan. 1, 2018, heaven gained a strong and beautiful angel by the name of Sophia Olivas Serna. She passed peacefully in the presence of her loved ones.
Sophia Olivas Serna, 85, was born July 15, 1932 to parents Aurelia and Julian Olivas in the community of Holman, N.M. In 1955, Sophia was united in marriage with Patricio Serna, Together they shared 44 years of marriage and eight children.
Sophia, a long-life homemaker, is preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings: Bersabe Martinez, Cornelia Olivas, Fabian Olivas, Alfonso Olivas, Carmen Velasquez, Lucille Maestas and Leroy Olivas. Sophia is celebrated and survived by: her brother, Tony Olivas and wife Lupe of Holman, N.M.; children: Patrick and Esther Serna of Grants, N.M.; Martin Serna of Ledoux, N.M.; Pauline and Floyd Duran, Elmer and Sherry Serna all El Abuelo, N.M.; Michael and Veronica Serna of Buena Vista, N.M.; Robert Serna and friend Diana of Angel Fire, N.M.; Valerie Vigil of Pueblo, CO; Sharon and Britton Pruitt of Albuquerque, N.M.
Sophia has also continued life through twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, numerous: nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends.
Sophia will be remembered, loved and missed by many for her good cooking, her upbeat dancing, die hard sports fanism, the company she brought during gatherings and the devotion she shared for Christ.
A rosary service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018 at 6 p.m. at St. Gertrude Church in Mora, N.M.
A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018 at 10 a.m., also at St. Gertrude, with Father James Sanchez (SOLT) as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Serna Family Cemetery El Abuelo, N.M. with the following serving as casket bearers: Jason Serna, Dominic Serna, Juan Duran, Jonathan Serna, Julio Serna, Gabriel Serna Sr., Matthew Vigil and Nathaniel Pruitt. Serving as honorary bearers will be all of her remaining grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
