Tony Martinez, Jr. 72, a resident of Albuquerque, N.M. for the past 13 years and longtime resident of Las Vegas, N.M. passed away on Oct. 31, 2017 at home in Albuquerque, N.M.
Tony was born on Nov. 24, 1944 in Las Vegas, N.M. to Tony Martinez, Sr. and Eugenia Jimenez Martinez. He was united in marriage to Viola C de Baca on Sept. 25, 1965. Tony served as mayor of Las Vegas, N.M., for 6 terms between 1988 and 2002. Served as City Councilor for two terms and one term as county assessor. Tony served as victim assistance advocate, also appointed human rights commissioner. He was a member of Kiwanis Cub of Las Vegas and many other organizations in Las Vegas. He also owned Tony's Food Market.
Tony was a kind, caring, creative, generous and well liked man who was respected by his family and friends of Las Vegas and Albuquerque. He was a Catholic and former member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Tony was preceded in death by his parents: Tony and Eugenia Martinez, brother: Eddie Ulibarri and sister-in-law: Tita Ulibarri; in-laws: Jesus and Carlotta C de Baca; brothers-n-law: Arthur C de Baca and Isidoro C de Baca.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Viola Martinez of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter: Margaret Solan; sons: Anthony Martinez III and wife Judy; Jose Martinez of Santa Fe, N.M.; grandchildren: Anthony Martinez IV, Amanda Martinez, Kyle Solan, Jose Martinez, Justine Solan and Feliz Martinez; great-grandchildren: Anthony Martinez V, Adrian Martinez, Jasmin Abraham and Landeynn Martinez; brothers: George Ulibarri of Denver, CO; Clifford Ulibarri of Albuquerque, N.M.; Herman Martinez (Teddy) of Albuquerque, N.M.; Carlos Martinez of Las Vegas, N.M.; sister: Arlene Gomez (Albert) of Florida. Brothers-in-law: Leo C de Baca (Mary Rose), Eddie C de Baca (Linda); sisters-in-law: Stella Estrada (Joe) and Rosie Baca; numerous: nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.
Rosary service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017 at 7 p.m.at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, N.M.. Funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 at 9 a.m., also at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, N.M. with Father Rob Yaksich as celebrant. Cremation has taken place and burial of cremains will be held at a later date.
