Vicenta Nelson Marquez, 93, passed away peacefully Sept. 8, 2017, in the presence of her family at Alta Vista Regional Hospital.
She was born to Christian Nelson and Luz Aragon Nelson in Anton Chico, N.M.
In 1943, she was united in marriage to Orlando Marquez. Together they raised nine children. For many years, they owned a grocery store and liquor store on Grand Avenue. They also were involved in other wholesale and retail businesses. In addition to being a very active business woman, Vicenta was involved in volunteer work. Vicenta was a member of the Las Vegas Hospital Auxiliary and Alta Vista Hospital Auxiliary. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters Court 1796. She also volunteered for the I.C. Parish.
She was a lifelong Catholic and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Vicenta Marquez is preceded in death by her husband, Orlando Marquez; daughter, Laura Marquez; daughter, Christine Marquez; grandson, Isaac Wildenstein; grandson, Sonny James Marquez; Uncle Antonio Ruiz and Aunt Henrietta Ruiz who raised her; brother, Randolfo Nelson; sisters, Mela Sanchez, Lola Sandoval, Olympia Welch; cousin, Lucy Ruiz Martinez; parents, Christian Nelson and Luz Aragon Nelson; paternal grandparents, Anders Nelson and Manuelita Mink Nelson; paternal step-great-grand father, John Henry Mink and paternal great grandmother, Maria Antonia Martinez; and maternal grandparents, Randolfo Aragon and Brigida Martinez Aragon.
She is survived by her children, Alex Marquez (Rita); Orlando Marquez, Jr. (Adelina); Barbara Fernandez (George); Kathy Marquez Gonzales, Joey Marquez (Roseann); Veronica Wildenstein (Warren); and Marcella Arellanes (Ralph); 27 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Nelson Lujan and Pat Lujan; sisters-in-law, Josephine Marquez and Corrine Marquez. and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and many close friends.
Vicenta had a passion for life. Her strong Catholic faith helped her when she was faced with challenges that this life can bring. She was a very generous and supportive person. She leaves a strong legacy. The main gift she leaves us with and which she will always be remembered for is the love she had for her family.
A Rosary will be recited at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, with Christian Mass at 10:00 a.m. both at the Immaculate Conception Church. After mass, graveside services will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Anton Chico.
