Demostenes Martinez, 90, formerly of Cheyenne, Wyo., Leadville, Colo., Pueblo, Colo., and longtime resident of El Carmen, passed away on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012.

He was born Dec. 11, 1922 in El Rito, to the late Pete Martinez and Tonita Rodarte-Martinez.
He was a Catholic and a member of St. Gertrude's Church in Mora. He worked in Cheyenne, Wyo. with Burlington Northern transferring to Leadville, Colo., worked there for 18 years then transferring to Pueblo, Colo. and retiring in 1983.
He and his wife moved back to El Carmen, where he enjoyed planting corn, peas and lots of pumpkins. He loved to hunt with his sons every year while living in Colorado and New Mexico. He enjoyed fishing, hiking and going to the mountains.
In 1991, he suffered a massive stroke that paralyzed his entire right side which limited his mobility and the activities he enjoyed doing. His doctors refer to him as "the miracle man."
Special thanks to their son Daniel for the care of his father in his last days and to his mother.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Pete and Tonita Martinez; brothers: Nelson Martinez, Felix Martinez and Luis Martinez; sisters: Viola Silva and Ernestine Zeman, father and mother-in-law: Emilio and Clorinda Martinez; sister-in-law: Emma Garcia, Mary Garcia and Carmen Martinez.
He is survived by his wife: Antonia Martinez of the family home in El Carmen; sons: Willie Martinez and wife Carol of Leadville, Colo., Emilio Martinez and wife Mary Winnemucca, Nev., and Daniel Martinez and wife Maria of Cheyenne, Wyo.; daughter: Teresa Padilla of Leadville, Colo.; grandchildren: Michael Martinez and wife Correen, Carlos Martinez, Alicia Martinez and husband Julian, Vanessa Valdez and husband Gustavo, Teddy Padilla and wife Jessica, Tyler Padilla, Kimberly Huff and husband Dustin, Daniel Ray Martinez, Jessica Martinez, Steven Martinez and Anthony Martinez: great-grandchildren: Jerrad, Jennifer, Matthew Valdez, Julian, Jalyssa, Christopher, Matthew Martinez, Makala, Isiah, Frances, Nathan, Antonio and Mya; brothers-in-law: Joe Martinez of El Carmen, Adam Martinez and wife Donna of Salida, Colo.; sisters-in-law: Irene Garcia and husband Manuel of El Carmen, Angie Martinez of Waverly, Mo. and Janna Martinez of S.C.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Cremation has taken place and rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28 at St. Gertrude's Church in Mora. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29 at St. Gertrudes Church in Mora, with Father James Sanchez serving as celebrant. Interment of cremains will follow at the El Carmen Cemetery in El Carmen.
