Gilbert Romero, affectionately known as "Cheesie," 49, passed away at his home on Thursday following a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Romero in 2005.
He is survived by his loving wife, Belinda of the family home in Los Vigiles; his daughter, Jennifer Armenta and husband Zeke of Santa Fe; his mother, Mary Romero and her companion, Andrew Valdez of Los Vigiles; two grandchildren, J.J. and JuJu Griego of Santa Fe; his padrinos, Ben and Mary Archibeque of Los Vigiles; an aunt, Martha O'Keefe of Denver, Colo.; and cousins, Pearl, Cindy, and Justin Martinez.
He was born in Las Vegas on June 8, 1964. He had worked at the Las Vegas Medical Center as a nurse tech and was a bus driver and custodian for the West and East Las Vegas School Districts and for a short time was a heavy equipment operator for the city of Las Vegas. He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge #408. His lobbies included hunting, fishing, and was into cars.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. today (Monday) at Immaculate Conception Church. Father George V. Salazar will officiate. The interment will follow in the Nuestra Señora de Refugio Cemetery in Los Vigiles with the following serving as casket bearers: Chris Rodarte, Ryan Romero, Ernest Martinez, Pat Trujillo, Cody Gallegos, Vidal Quintana, Michael Rodarte, and Eddie Quintana.
Memorials may be sent to the Building Fund at the Immaculate Conception Church, 811 Sixth Street, Las Vegas, N.M. 87701.
