James Stewart Obituary

Stewart, Ph.D., James A. March 9, 1926 - May 5, 2012 James A. Stewart (Dr. Jim) died at his residence at Village on the Isle Venice on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the age of 86 from complications of Parkinson's. He was born in Toronto, Canada, and grew up on farms in northern Alberta and British Columbia. After serving in the Canadian Army in WWII, he received his undergraduate degree from the U. of B.C. and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the U. of Washington in Seattle. He served as a professor at U.B.C. in Vancouver and at U.of Alberta in Calgary. After moving to the United States, he taught at San Diego State College and then Boston University and Salem State College in MA. He was licensed in clinical and counseling psychology and worked in private practice in Andover, MA counseling children and young adults. He also served as a senior school administrator in public schools in Wilmington and Lawrence, MA. He was principal of the First Lutheran Church School of Los Angeles. He held life membership in the Am. Psych. Assn. as a school psychologist. In Dr. Jim?s retirement, he served with his wife Irene as volunteers with the ELCA Global Missions on St. Thomas, USVI, and in China, India, Thailand, and Russia. Together they were Peace Corps Volunteers in the Slovak Republic. Survivors are his wife Irene P. Stewart; a sister Gladys Minshull and brother-in-law Jack Minshull of Vancouver and nephews, Jack and Brian. He leaves three children; Scott A. Stewart, M.D. of Needham, MA, Ian K. Stewart of Bedford, NY and Heather Hardie, M.D. of Foxboro, MA as well as six grandchildren. There are two step-children; Patricia Shapiro of Cumming, GA and Michael Johnson of Glenville, NY and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Sincere appreciation to TideWell Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness. Farley Funeral Home of Venice is handling the arrangements.
