Vidal SASSOON Obituary

SASSOON, Vidal American Friends of The Hebrew University and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem are profoundly saddened by the passing of our cherished friend Vidal Sassoon, a brilliant businessman and visionary who founded The Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism at Hebrew University. Vidal Sassoon maintained a lifelong dedication to Israel, actively seeking to eradicate antisemitism worldwide. At The Hebrew University, through the Center bearing his name, Vidal Sassoon helped to advance the highest levels of scholarship, research, and outreach. Vidal Sassoon received an honorary doctorate from Hebrew University. A Benefactor of the University, he was awarded the Judas L. Magnes Award in recognition of his humanitarianism. He served as an Honorary Governor of the University's International Board of Governors, as an Honorary Vice President of national AFHU and as President Emeritus of AFHU's Western Region.
We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Ronnie and his children, Eden, Elan and David. May they be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be sent to American Friends of The Hebrew University in support of The Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism-AFHU, 11500 W. I worked with Mr. Sassoon in the mid-seventies and enjoyed celebrating his 50th birthday with Count Basie and his orchestra. I later worked for President Ronald Reagan. Very similar and great men. Lifted all in their presence and definitely made their mark on the world and in the hearts of millions. May they both rest in peace. Yvonne Maddox Roderick (Utah)

Vidal Sassoon, your presence on this planet will be greatly missed. Vidal taught so many to take great pride in their craft, and to always strive to improve. Cutting hair is an art form when taken seriously. Hair can be the medium to shape and colour into the artists and clients artistic expression. Vidal was a true creative genius ( as was Annie Humphries his colorist) and Vidal was kind enough to pass down his methods to those who strive to be the best at what they do.
Thank you Vidal Sassoon!

Why I thought he was an amazing man: When I was about 25, in the late 1970s, I thought of this man as "that hair guy." My brother had his hair cut by students at Vidal's salon, for free, and often arrived home with a rather strange new look. What did I know? I was invited to a luncheon for "young professional women," for the L.A. Jewish Federation, and Vidal was the guest speaker. I was so blase, oblivious to a lot going on around me, but internally Jewish and supportive of Israel without being active about it. Well, everything changed that day. Vidal got up to speak, and like the swami hypnotically elevating his subject, I was mesmerized. He told his story. His upbringing. His commitment to Israel as a teen, going to Israel to fight for Independence, never yielding in remember who he was, a Jew. Then he asked all of us to make a monthly pledge, as much as we could, to support the Jewish Federation, which supported Israel. People started calling out amounts. Even though this was a "young" women's group, I was among the youngest, barely out of school and struggling for a career, earning $13,000 a year. Up I stood and yelled, "$60!" That doesn't sound like a lot, but after taxes, I took home barely enough to pay my rent, car insurance and gas each month without asking for a handout from my parents. I made the first two pledge payments, then talked to my very wise mother. I couldn't make more than $20 a month, and that was going to be hard. She told me to call the Federation and tell them to reduce my payment, they would understand. She also told me, to paraphrase, that Vidal Sassoon was a remarkable Jew who didn't just talk-the-talk, he walked the walk. This was the beginning of my living what I had learned in religious school but never really incorporated into my life until then: tzedakah. I might have come to it in my own way eventually, but it took the inspiration of the most amazing man, Vidal Sassoon, to get me on the road to it sooner. Even in my most difficult days, I have never forgotten to support our people, because of him. May his memory live on in acts of kindness and charity!

I was a VP at Sassoon in the early to mid-50's. Vidal was not only my boss and good friend, but got me through a life threatening medical problem.A truthfully outstanding person as a businessman, and a human being. I could write a book about the man as a human being, and the bigger than life person in the health and beauty business. I, and all my fellow ex Sassoon coworkers are saddened by the loss.

I met Vidal when my husband was the business manager for famed Beverly Hills hairdresser, Gene Shacove, who was a devotee of Vidal's. One night we all danced the night away at Gene's CANDY STORE disco.

Then to publicize the opening in
1982, of what he established: the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem - I was Vidal's dinner party in Houston, Texas.

A better human being you would be hard-pressed to find!

Vidal Sassoon was the first teacher of 'precision haircutting.' I was lucky enough to take haircutting lessons from him at the Midwest Beauty Show in Chicago in the 1960s. He transformed scissor cutting. I still cut hair, due to learning his technique, better than 99% of the hairstylists out there. RIP Vidal, and thank you again for that autographed picture you gave me.
