Margaret Moran Obituary

August 6, 1917 - October 11, 2013 Margaret Moran, a lifelong Californian and resident of Los Angeles for over 80 years, died peacefully on October 11, 2013 at St. John of God Retirement & Care Center; she was 96. Margaret (also known as Peggy) was born in San Francisco on August 6, 1917. She graduated from the Los Angeles Catholic Girls' High School in 1934 (now Bishop Conaty Memorial High School), the first Catholic girls' school in Los Angeles. She received her undergraduate degree from Mount St. Mary's College and a master's degree in science education in 1951 from the University of Southern California. A philanthropist and a lover of travel, music, photography, Notre Dame and USC football and all things Irish, Margaret leaves behind many friends and a large extended family, including the Naylor and McSherry families of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Southern California also has been enriched with several generations of students she taught during her 40+ years of being a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Some of the schools who were graced by her presence and knowledge include Venice High School and Manual Arts High School, both in Los Angeles. After graduating from Mount St. Mary's College, she worked at Pacific Mutual in Los Angeles. During this time she also worked as a volunteer at the USO Greater Los Angeles Area, a place where she met many of her longtime friends, including sisters Barbara (LeBlanc) Lamb and Joan (Leblanc) Horn. A conservative, graceful and patrician woman in many ways, Margaret also showed her independent streak and adventurous style for the time. After working at Pacific Mutual, she moved to Japan for three years to teach English during the Korean War. In 1957, she and her good friend, Estella (Gonzales) Naylor van Hoorn, traveled throughout Europe in a stylish Renault; an adventure which secured her love for both travel and photography. A devout Catholic, she was an active member of the Catholic Daughters, the local Right to Life group, and a parishioner of St. Jerome Church. For many years, she served as the editor and chief photographer of the St. Jerome Church newspaper. She also had her photographs appear in the regional Catholic newspaper, The Tidings. She was particularly proud of having her pictures of the ordination of three priests as bishops appear in the paper in 1987; the event was attended by over 16,000 people. In addition to family gatherings, church activities, and photography, painting and attending musical concerts also brought her great joy. Her family--many individuals and families spread throughout California--will miss her warmth, intelligence, gift for conversation and profound interest in others. A memorial service to celebrate her exceptional life will take place at St. Jerome's Parish on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 10AM, 5550 Thornburn Street, Los Angeles, CA, with a reception to follow. A burial ceremony will take place on the same day at Holy Cross Cemetery at 2PM. 5835 W. Slauson Avenue, Culver City, CA.

Peggy was always willing to help in any way she could to let more people know about coping with vision loss. She shared her sense of humor and upbeat spirit with all she met at The Center for the Partially Sighted.

Auntie Peggy - you were the best godmother a girl could hope to have. I cherish our many memories together, especially the trip to England and Ireland when I was 10 and all of those wonderful holiday dinners at the McSherry's. Lots of love, Katy
