Zelner, Joseph William
November 6, 2014 Born in New York City in 1926 to Bertram and Cecilia Zelner, Joe attended public schools and was recognized for his academic talents at a young age. He graduated from high school at age 16 and enrolled in college at NYU. At age 18 he enlisted in the Navy and was trained as an electrician. He was deployed to the Pacific Theater in 1944 and served two years. When the war ended he returned to New York to continue with his education. He then met Elinor, the girl of his dreams. Joe earned his degree, working by day and attending school at night while dating Elinor. Joe and Elinor were married on September 5, 1948 and then moved to California. In California, Joe established his own successful engineering firm and ran his business until retirement. Among his engineering projects were many of the major hotels in Las Vegas. Joe and Elinor have three children-Barry, Rick and Linda. His family was the most important thing in his life. He made time to serve as a scoutmaster for the Cub Scouts and helped Elinor in her role as an assistant Girl Scout leader. Joe and Elinor loved to dance together. They were exceptional ballroom dancers and also competed as square dancers. Activities were the means to spend quality time together. Joe loved to travel. He loved to take his family on trips, including early adventures such as the 1964 World's Fair. No destination was too foreign or intimidating. Joe and Elinor traveled to China, Russia, Japan and Eastern Europe. In recent years he took the family on cruises to Alaska, Europe, the East Coast and the Panama Canal. In addition to travel, Joe was passionate about his hobbies. He was a collector of many things. He built model railroads, cars, planes and complicated wooden ships. His hobby room was his castle. Joe was preceded in his death by his brother Charles and his sister Gail. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elinor, his children Barry Zelner, Rick Zelner (Elissa) and Linda Anderson (Kevin) as well as grandchildren Brian, Sean, Kelsey, Lauren and Brandon. He is tremendously missed but left a wonderful legacy.
