Bernice Muriel Sterne, 86, a resident of North Hills (Sepulveda), California, for 54 years, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2013 in Panorama City, California. Bernice was born April 12, 1926 in Gary, Indiana and is remembered for her warmth, kindness and wit. She carried out undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan and Indiana University and received her Master of Library Science from Indiana University. She worked at the Indiana University Law Library and as a Librarian for the City of Los Angeles at the Pacoima and Sylmar branch libraries for 35 years. She was an admired colleague and supervisor who supported and encouraged her employees. Bernice was a devoted member of the Librarians' Guild/AFSCME Local 2626. She was a proud union activist and fought for women's rights, especially equal pay for equal work. She enjoyed playing the flute, reading, discussing politics, making puns, but most of all, spending time with her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Lionel; sons David Sterne, Harrison and wife Denyse Miner Sterne, Paul and wife Svetlana Bulyzhkina; daughters Miriam and husband Bill Marlin, Judy Sterne, Sara and husband Matt Avance, Rachel Sterne-Marr and husband Jon Marr; 9 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brother Alvin D. and wife Brendie Rosenbloom and sister Lila R. Meyers. Memorial contributions may be made in Bernice's honor to Reading is Fundamental, the Museum of Tolerance, Southern Poverty Law Center/Teaching Tolerance, , National Breast Cancer Foundation or related organizations.
