Hugh M. Kopel, D.D.S., passed away on May 22, 2013 at the age of 94. Dr. Kopel was a loving father, grandfather, husband, and professional. Passionate about dentistry from the start, Dr. Kopel earned his D.D.S. degree at the University of Detroit in 1943, followed by his M.S. degree at the University of Michigan
in 1948. In the interim, he served as a Captain in the Dental Corps of the US Army
with the 11th Airborne Division. After the war, he entered private practice in Detroit in 1950 as well as instructing at his alma mater, where he eventually took the title of Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Pedodontic Studies. Dr. Kopel moved to Los Angeles in 1967, where he served as an esteemed professor at USC for over twenty years. In 1995, Hugh joined the UCLA
School of Dentistry faculty, and was active with the Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center until his 90th birthday. Dr. Kopel was the beloved husband of Lillian, who predeceased him in 2008, and the devoted father of his son Reid, daughter Tracey, son-in-law Howard, and three grandchildren. Dr. Kopel will be remembered as a steadfast family man- a man of endless curiosity, humor, intelligence, and joy.
A service in his honor will be held Sunday May 26th at 3pm at Hillside Mortuary, 6001 W. Centinela Ave. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Children's Dental Clinic at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
