Kathryn Kurtz McCallus, 89, of Van Nuys, died peacefully at home with family at her side on September 3, 2013. She was born to Addie Belle (Gillett) and Frank Kurtz in Loma Linda, California. She grew up on the family farm in Humboldt Arizona. She received her B.S. from Arizona State University
. Kathryn taught Middle School Home Economics in the LAUSD for over 20 years and retired from Sepulveda Middle School in 1986. Her lifelong interest in food and nutrition extended beyond her work and into her own kitchen where she delighted family and friends with her amazing culinary skills. Kathryn was passionate about gardening and she took pride in her bountiful summer tomatoes and sunflowers. She enjoyed traveling the world and tasting the cuisines of the countries she visited which included most of Europe, Asia, Africa and Russia. Above all she loved her family. She is survived by her son, Michael (Naomi) McCallus and daughter, Pamela (McCallus) Higgins; her sister Jean (Kurtz) Gordon and brother Frank Stephen Kurtz; grandchildren Sean and Melissa Higgins as well as beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
