With his wife Becky and daughter Patty Bordiga by his side, Melvin passed away peacefully due to complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was raised on a farm in Colorado and later received degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado and UCLA. He was employed for 20 yrs. with Hughes Aircraft Co. and Bunker-Ramo before starting his own successful company producing Automated Compilation Mapping Devices. His favorite pastime was golfing with his many friends and quietly observing the world, applying his unique twist of humor to it to brighten the lives of those around him. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Trudi Baker-Reed.
