NEWMAN, R. Leith (Lee)
Born in Los Angeles on Sept. 14, 1924. Died in Newport Beach on Sept. 6, 2013. Lee was strongly influenced in life by the values taught by his maternal grandfather, a Baptist minister. After the Great Depression, Lee's family settled in North Hollywood, and he entered UCLA
at age 16. Two years later, his father died, and Lee followed his brothers into the military. During World War II
, he served with the RAF in Watchfield, England, and at Orly Field in Paris. He ultimately attained the rank of Captain in the US Army
He was married to his beloved wife, Liz Swiertz Newman, for almost 45 years. He is also survived by his daughters Janice Newman, Cheryl Symmes, and Patti Crandall (Jim), his sons Joe (aka Dick), Robert (Britt), and Tim and Mark Regan; and his sister Shirley LaRoy. Lee was the proud Grandpa of 12 grandchildren and "Spike" to 5 great-grandchildren; and proud uncle of the McCarthys.
Lee was successful in all aspects of his life. He was an excellent student at the U of Washington, where he studied meteorology while in the Air Corps, and at UCLA where he earned his BA. Lee retired as vice president of Chotiner & Gumbiner Const. after 42 years supervising large projects in the western states. He invested in residential real estate into his retirement years. Lee virtuously watched his own diet and never smoked cigarettes. His favorite subjects were politics and economics. Lee and Liz were life-time bridge partners. Lee was a kind and generous man, the personification of Democratic and familial values, and his wisdom, hugs, and love will be profoundly missed by family and friends alike.
