Robert Duke ("Bob") Bannon was the eldest child of Earl and Maurine Bannon. Born in Los Angeles, Bob attended Loyola High School and UCLA
, received his B.A. from U.C. Berkeley and his law degree from the USC Law School. In 1952, Bob joined the Army
JAG Corps, spending his term of service in San Luis Obispo and near Limoges, France.
Bob practiced estate planning and tax law for 57 years, building up a reputation for superior legal expertise and a warm, convivial relationship with clients and colleagues. A certified specialist in tax law and in estate planning trust and probate law, Bob was elected to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, consisting of the top two percent of estate planning attorneys. He was also active for many years as an officer in the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the State Bar of California and the Pasadena Bar Association.
Bob was well known for driving from Pasadena to the Los Angeles Athletic Club at 4 a.m. every day, to work out with his longstanding group of friends, then having breakfast at the Pantry or Pacific Dining Car before going to work. Traveling with his group of friends, Bob ran - and finished - the London Marathon, New York Marathon and Boston Marathon, among other races. Bob and this group also took regular vacations, including to trips to Russia, Costa Rica, England, and Mexico. In 1987, he visited China with a legal delegation led by Justice Broussard of the California Supreme Court.
Bob's greatest joy was his large and talented family, all of whom adored and admired him. With his family, he enjoyed trips to Arrowhead, celebratory barbeques, informal dinners and many special occasions. He was proud of having produced a brood that included two attorneys, three financial planners, a social worker, and the owner of a successful small business, among other industrious family members.
Bob's first wife, Rebekah Haney Bannon, predeceased him in 1991. He is survived by his second wife, Alexandra; his three children, Mel Bannon (Gail), Mary Ellen Stambaugh (Dave) and Anne Tortomasi (Tom); his nine grandchildren Chris Bannon (Danielle), Kelley Lashley (Dan), Mike Bannon (Rachel), Jeff Bannon (Jennifer), Jay Lubow, Sarah Lubow, Rebekah Lubow, Tommy Tortomasi and Katie Tortomasi; and his six great-grandchildren - Chris Bannon's children Maddie, Jack and Lily; Kelley Lashley's children Emma and Rhett; and Mike Bannon's daughter Avery.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday July 19, 2013 at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, Pasadena, Ca. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Norris Cancer Center or City of Hope.
