Dear Baby Gorilla. Miss you lots, but we talk about you all the time. You are in our thoughts, storytelling, and everyday living. You'd be amazed at everything that's happening in the world. Oh the phone calls we'd be having right about now. What's going on over there?? Give me an update sometime, will ya? More later!

SO much has happened! We're in a pandemic! You missed being part of history. I really miss you, my friend. I was in your old stomping grounds this past weekend (Montecito) and could not help but think of you the entire time. We shared so many laughs and great memories. Walking State Street, shrimp tacos on the pier, and Litos! Who could forget Litos?
Love you pal.

Hey Buddy. So much has happened since I last looked you in the eyes. I still think about you and tell others about you. You are still alive in my home because not a day goes by without me talking about you to my little girl, Ava, or someone else in my world. I can still make a room roar with laughter after hearing about something funny you and I did, experienced, or witnessed! You were, and still are my best friend. Here's to you, kid. Cheers..

Hey Pal,
Your ears must be warm because there's been lots of "thinking about you" in the last 24 hours. Your music has been lighting up people's lives again, most recently on television. I am so proud of the music you left here for everyone to enjoy. The team is down here doing a spectacular job with your legacy. Let them know your watching, k?

In the beginning of time there were only elephants. The giant and gentle creatures of the universe. I can still hear them whispering the secrets of our future. The music of their ivory tusks billows and wilts in the shadows of my mind.
And the menagerie goes round and round. The memories crawl up and down... this carousel of dreams.
In the end, the ashes dance like dandelion dust falling from the skies. You and the melody are gone, but the music still lingers on.

We know you would be here today if heaven wasn't so far away.
From this place I can only dream of your time and space. I'm just trying to find a little bit of home. I came to visit, all be it a little too late, so that I wouldn't feel so alone. And I want to trade this land of stars for yours. And I want just a little faith. I've been looking for you in the shadows and hoping you can hear me.
I know you need to be with the gentle creatures. So I am working on this go-cart made of cardboard. Cause you've been gone for just a little too long.

Well, there is so much to tell you although I suspect that you already know everything. January 25th, 2013, last Friday, would have been our Golden Anniversary. Although we were no longer married, you always sent me a card, which eventually came to acknowledge the great friendship and bond that we were able to forge not only between you and me but also between you and Brent and Brianna. Truly amazing. What fun times we had.
I know you would be so very pleased that Brent and Brianna and Kelly are reactivating you record companies and web sites, and Michael is working diligently on his and your script. And I can see you just beam at your "niece's" great soul as evidenced by her writing and her encounters with the "soul mates" of Uncle Verne, such as her meeting in Paris with Lapinu - a trip you were always going to make. Well, you did make it through her and I know you were there as you were with us Friday night as we toasted you on the anniversary dinner.

V,
I was thinking of you today and had to say something. YOu always thought me many things along the way. Our friendship seemed to always have a daily lesson attached to it. You and I seemed to learn new things from one another, and because of that we always seemed like the only wise men in the room when we were together. You taught me to laugh at everything, and take things with a grain of salt...but only after I've sifted through the salt to get all crap out of it. YOu taught me to love life in a big way. The way you always did, and for me that was not a problem. You confirmed something I always knew, which was to watch my back, because there's always someone out in the world waiting for you to fall and take your spot. The biggest thing I learned from you was to always tell someone you love, that you love them, because that might just be the last time you say it. We always ended our meetings, and conversations with love, which always makes me smile when I think about you. I'm still here on earth, doing the things we taught each other, and living life for you, through my eyes and actions. I am appreciating every second.
Thanks for the lessons, pal.
I love ya, Shuga!

I am riding the highest wave, holding the reigns of an elephant with a diving force. Wearing a crown made of tear drops. I am pulling the reigns back into me and aiming for the skies. Because you haven't been back in some time to visit me. Because I don't have a tall enough ladder to climb to you. Because my arms aren't long enough to reach you. Because I turned around and you vanished in the sea. The wind tempts me to let go but my heart will not allow my fingers to release this hold. And I am wishing I never closed my eyes cause you wondered off somewhere I can't yet be.

When the world settles, for a brief moment there is a faint sepia scent in the air. The light disperses from the fog. There is a knocking on my chest and then a stillness in my heart. A sudden flash from a twinkle of light rests on a dewdrop. Makes me remember that we are part of something bigger here. Still I am reminded my wings are too small.
Once again I am petrified, as I try to swallow the echo of the mountains rolling into the skies. I feel the pull of the world tugging at my feet. Telling me to move on. Telling me to whisper our prayers in that giant seashell at the bottom of the ocean.
The world rotates again. The phone rings and its not you on the other end...again. My tears melt in the sand. Reminding me of this borrowed time and this momentary light.
You fly without the weight of the world as I stand on my hands on this edgecliff lane. Because my feet are tired from traveling this earth trying to find you again. Because its a long and far road from here up to there.
I am hoping and wishing my feet will walk up there if my head is down here. If not, I will continue to support my body with my hands and wait for the world to revolve again.
The wind floats through my toes. Streaming through you and then streaming through me. My finger tips clench the fragments of the soil. My body starts to fade backward as I combat the zephyr with my jedi limbs. Maintaining my position, I wonder if its easier to say good-bye if my heart is closer to the sky...

3 years ago today on this date, I stood by you and others as we paid our respects to a little forgotten side show performer named Schlitze. Due to the beautiful bio you wrote about this man, I was inspired to help get his grave marked. I never thought I would actually get to meet you, much less become friends with you.
Meeting you has influenced me greatly by your wit, humor, gentle and sometimes not so gentle advice. :)

To my Uncle Verne,
Remember when I was little on Appian Way you held up this giant sea shell to my ear and told me it was the ocean? We ate "roll ups." I sat on the counter kicking the cupboards to the beat of the ocean at my ear. Later you gave me Montecito and I would sit on the ocean floor and let the waves crash above me. I felt the water fill my ears as the symphony of the dolphins echoed throughout my body. When I came up for air, I looked back and you were on the balcony smiling.
One day I will see you smiling at me once again and it will fill my heart with the same eternal peace I grew to know sitting on that ocean floor. No one will ever know how much you mean to me.
Love,
Miss B

Sometimes I still can't believe Verne's no longer with us. I find myself thinking about giving him a call, or expecting one...usually at odd hours.
I was fortunate to work with Verne on numerous musical adventures, and with Verne, they truly were adventures. I will forever miss our time together, but I'll always remember the good times, the good music, and all the laughs.
Much has been said about Verne...his wrestling, make-up and mask days, and so on.
I'd like to mention that he was a consummate musician. An excellent piano player, he made every note count...a wonderful songwriter, and so much better of a singer than he, himself thought. It's not easy to imagine I won't have a chance to make music with him again...not for awhile, that is.
Here's to you, Verne....my hat's off to ya.
Always has been.
Vaya con Dios, mijo.

Big man...
Your passing has left a hole in my heart and in my life I'll never be able to fill.
Seems you've been with me in some way, shape or form since the beginning.
From the pages of the Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines my brother and sister read to me when I was a toddler...
To the pages of the pro wrestling rags I read as a teen...
To the pages we wrote TOGETHER these last 18 months.
Verne, you were my childhood inspiration, my friend and confidant, and the best damned writing partner I'll ever have.
I'll love you always and forever.

To some people, Verne Langdon was a professional wrestler/trainer/promoter, singer/songwriter, record producer, radio host, make-up artist, mask designer, and magician. To me, more importantly than those pursuits, he was a friend and a mentor.
By the time I first got in touch with Verne in 2003, he had already achieved decades’ worth of successes in several entertainment-related industries. I, of course, had no such achievements to my credit. Nonetheless, Verne not only gave me the time of day, but he saw potential in me, and he let me know this often.
As I look back on old e-mails (many of which contain Verne’s signature red and blue font that I will surely miss) and think back to our conversations, it hits me that despite how naïve I probably came off to Verne, he never gave up on me, nor did he ever give up on teaching me life lessons. Even when I ignored his advice, he still never gave up on me.
When thinking about how to best describe Verne, the word I keep coming back to is “wise.” It is this – the wisdom that he possessed and his willingness to impart that wisdom to others in the form of advice – that I want people to know about him most. When Verne gave you advice, it may or may not have been the advice you *wanted* to hear, but it was the advice that you *should* hear, and he was telling you it for a very good reason. I am grateful that Verne shared some of his wisdom and advice with me.
There are several lessons I will take away from Verne, but all of them can be considered as falling under one umbrella principle: always think about the big picture of things.
A lot of the time, things that we may think are important actually pale in comparison to those things that actually do matter, such as:
- excelling in your education
- excelling in showing respect--particularly to those who taught you what you know and to those who came before you (i.e. those who taught your teachers what they know)
- excelling in being honest and in staying true to your word
- excelling in behaving like a professional if you are going to claim to be a professional
- excelling in being original
- excelling in doing everything you do to the best of your ability
Verne, thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom with me, and thank you for seeing something special in me--and for letting me know that you see something special in me…I hope to make you proud.

Verne, You allowed me the live a childhood dream of being a wrestler. You provided myself and others the opportunity to entertain others, and be an artist. Your influence was huge, and although for some, too much to handle, I loved every minute of it. The best way to honor you is to do what you and seem to always do on the phone or in the company of one another...I will cut a promo about you: Whether you like or don't like, learn to love him! Verne Langdon is the greatest thing to happen to this world since sliced pie! You are often imitated but will never be duplicated, because you're the best thing going today! Diamonds are forever, and so is Verne Langdon! The greatest human, a person can ever know. Whoooooooo!! I love you, pal.

Verne,
As my makeup teacher at Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College you taught me to make my rubber clown nose -- my first prosthetic. And 3 years later, when you gave me my first monster-making job at Universal Studios Tour's "Land of 1000 Faces", you taught me virtually everything I know about sculpting, mold-making, masks and makeup effects, and launched me on a successful 35+ year career as a maker of movie monsters.
From the first Don Post masks in "Famous Monsters" I adored as a child, to my own photo in that magazine sculpting the Phantom of the Opera, to my current work as a creature modeler at ILM, you have been my inspiration and mentor. I will be eternally grateful.

To "Big Bear",
Your earthly presence in my life, Brent's life, and Miss B's life has always been difficult to explain to others, but we found that an explanation is no longer necessary, and maybe never was, because you were a significant presence in the lives of so many others whom you loved and loved you back. You were a giver, not a taker. Although we will deeply miss your physical presence, I know you will be with us each and every moment of every day. Thank you for being so brave as to move on first. I miss you with all of my heart. This is so painful to let you go. You were my uncle, my brother, my mother, my father...my family. I saw the sky when you passed. Thank you for letting me know you are ok. Thank you for always giving me everything I could have ever asked for and more. Thank you for the city lights (our jewel box), thank you for the ocean (our slice of heaven). Thank you for loving me, my mom and dad so much. Thank you for teaching me how to laugh, how to cry and how to dance. Thank you for giving me a childhood. Thank you for teaching me that family isn't a word or blood, it is love.
