Joel Pressman Obituary

April 17, 1950 - November 18, 2013 Born April 17, 1950 in Los Angeles, California to Marjorie and Rabbi Jacob Pressman, Joel attended Beverly Vista School and Beverly Hills High School. He attended USC and also received his masters in choral music at USC. Throughout his school years he performed in shows at schools and in local synagogues and churches. After graduation he performed in many venues, both in choirs and as a soloist, including on Broadway. He went on to teach choral music and performing arts at Beverly Hills High School, and for many years was chairman of the Performing Arts Department. He retired in June 2013. He also spent many summers at ISOMATA (Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts), in Idyllwild, California, first as a student and then as a teacher. For several months he has been suffering with cancer and has been given loving care by his children, daughter Aviva and son Elijah, as well as his sister, Judy and brother Daniel. He was beloved not only by his parents, siblings, children and many friends, but also by his students of the past 38 years. He will be greatly missed. Joel was 63 at the time of his death. Services will be private. There will be a public memorial at a time to be announced. Donations in his name may be made to Idyllwild Arts or the American Cancer Society. It is impossible 10 years have happened since you left the planet. Your shoes are in my car. I miss you everyday. I love you. I loved you before I could process what was happening to you - and between us. I love you now. Please do visit me if you can. Leslie

My deepest condolences to Joel's children, the rest of his family, and the extraordinary community that he built -- and that now grieves him.

One of my most enduring images from elementary school is of Joel and Joanna Hall (later Gleason), outside the auditorium at Beverly Vista. A period had ended, the bell had rung, and most of us were there in the hallway, scattering to whatever was next; class, lunch, recess... In the midst of it all, were Joanna and Joel: half-walking, half-running, grinning at each other, and belting out Broadway show tunes.

Thank you for that memory, Joel. Your and Joanna's joy was infectious that day; Just as you moved me with your sense of humor, wisdom, and courage in the last few months of your life through the remarkable videos that you shared on the Internet. What a special and delicious human being you were; and what a marvelous spirit you leave as your legacy. Your memory will always be a blessing!

Joel was an extraordinarily charismatic person, musician and teacher. He was passionate about his students and his craft. He inspired excellence. And he was very funny. He will be missed every day.

For the master.

Mr. Pressman was a wonderful teacher and person. He taught our son for four incredible years: taught him about music, about hard work, about dedication, about caring, about standing up for one's beliefs, about giving back, about paying it forward, about doing what's right and much more. Thank you Mr. Pressman for all that you did for our son, our family and for all the other sons, daughters, families and friends whose lives you brightened. You were the true definition of a mensch. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

He is irreplaceable as a music and choir director. He had a profound influence on my music and vocal training. To date, I still use the physical techniques he taught, for improved vocal performance.
