Charles passed away peacefully at age 99. He is survived by his two sons, Richard and Michael, his granddaughter Wendy, and two great-grandsons, Lucas and Colin. Charles was born in Cleveland in 1914 and graduated from Case Western Reserve University, where he was a golden glove boxer. In 1935 he began his career as a dedicated public servant with the WPA. He married the love of his life, Dora Gewirtz, in 1937 and shortly thereafter they moved to Los Angeles. Charles served in the Navy from 1944-46 and earned his Masters Degree in social work from USC. Charles and Dora were married 61 wonderful years filled with travel and friends. In 1943, Charles began his work at the Los Angeles Jewish Community Center, later becoming its executive director, and opened its first westside center. He devoted his life to service of the Jewish community and continued working tirelessly for Jewish causes even after his retirement in 1976. During the course of his career, Charles received 12 commendations from the City of Los Angeles and State of California, and his contributions were acknowledged in the Congressional Record. Memorial contributions may be made to United Jewish Welfare Fund.
