ROSS , Daniel
(77), of Los Angeles, after a long illness, passed on April 24th. Dan was born in Iowa on August 24th, 1929 to Robert and Catherine Ross. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean war. Upon his return he came to the West Coast, eventually settling in Los Angeles.
Originally seeking an acting career he found his first niche in the entertainment industry as a photographer. His work includes set photography for the film "Inherit the Wind", photojournalistic works of the 1964 Democratic Convention as well as many other portraits of actors and musicians.
He later continued his career as Assistant Executive Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. During his 20 year career at the Academy he was closely involved with the production of the Academy Awards shows, the historical aspects of the Academy and most prominently his work with the Scientific and Technical Committee.
After leaving the Academy he became Executive Director of the American Society of Cinematographers, (ASC), where he continued his work in the scientific and technical branches of film.
Dan's career path eventually led him to his last position as Administrator for the Synagogue for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles where his dedication and loyalty were appreciated by all.
He was a person with great communicative skill and eloquence, especially comedic. He enjoyed travel, films, literature, photography and his family.
Dan is survived by his wife of 33 years, Suzanne Ross, son, Brian and his girlfriend Christina McComas, brother, Tim Ross, sister Barbara Gillette, sister-in-law, Sheila Steinbach , mother-in-law Lillian Litwin and his many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, April 26th, 1 p.m. at Groman Mortuary at Mount Eden Memorial Park, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills, CA, 800-522- 4875.
