David RAPPOPORT Obituary

RAPPOPORT, David (83), died peacefully and unexpectedly with his family by his side, on October 6. For more than 40 years, in the classroom, David was a masterful school counselor who succeeded motivating disadvantaged kids from dropping out. Out of school Dave loved nothing more than playing, hiking and camping with his five grandkids, and his many nieces and nephews. For 14 years his Dave's Day Camp gave pure joy to kids. He also loved his Tigers and Dodgers. At 40 he tenaciously returned to school for a Psychology PhD. David is survived by Audrey, loving wife for 57 years, sons Alan, Jeremy, and Adam, their wives Barbara, Sherry, and Laura, daughter Aviva, and his favorites: Grandkids Mindy, Jake, Jamie, Aaron, and Ryan. Services 11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries- Hollywood Hills, 800-600-0076.

David was a great communicator. He always listened to all before he spoke. When he did speak he did so with great compassion. I will always miss him.

I'm one of David's sons, and I just wanted to thank all of you for telling our family how Dad influenced your lives.
His students meant so much to him, and he would be pleased with what you wrote, and your sentiments mean a lot to our family.

Dave taught me to respect humanity. He took good care of us at Mid City Alternative School. His selflessness will be missed by all of us.

Dave was one of the most caring and nurturing people I have ever known in life. It has been an honor to know him.

I love you Dave; thank you for being there for me, when I needed you. You taught me to face life’s issues with my eyes open. You were our avatar!

Dave was one of those rare human beings who put students first. He always believed in all of us, teachers too. I give him credit for being the person who kept Area E/Mid City from chaos. I remember the difficulties we had at school in the early 70's when Dave came to be counselor. We were blessed to have such a person in our lives.

Dave had a huge influence on me. The work I do today with public school kids is testament to that influence. Dave was one of the kindest people I ever met. My heart goes out to his family and the extended family he welcomed us into.

It is with great sadness that I have learned of David passing. He was a mentor and a friend since I was a student at John Burroughs in Los Angeles. Whenever we spoke, Dave always liked to remind me of the time we were both at a LA Kings game in 1980 in which a 52 year old Gordie Howe, was checked over the boards by a young King player. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. We are all better persons for having known him, he touched so many.

The thing I remember most is that Dave always had time or made the time to discuss any problems you had and was there when you needed him.

When I think of my years at Mid-City I think of David(Dave) as standing out among the people that helped me during those crucial years of my life in middle school. I will never forget David and his impact on me at that time.
