Hester, Donald K September 27, 1926 - January 8, 2012 Don Hester, Orthopedic Surgeon, advocate for those with Cerebral Palsy, and avid swimmer, died at his home in Long Beach, CA on Sunday, January 8th. He was 85. Born September 27, 1926, Don Hester was a long time resident of Santa Monica where he practiced as an Orthopedic Surgeon. He spent his retirement years in Long Beach, CA. The cause of death was complications from Parkinson??s disease. Dr. Hester served in the US Navy before entering Stanford University where he received his BA and MD, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He did his internship at Los Angeles County Hospital with residencies at White Memorial Hospital, Children's Orthopedic Hospital, and Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. Dr. Hester served as Clinical Associate in Surgery /Orthopedics at UCLA Medical School. He taught Orthopedics at UCLA, Shriners Hospital and Rancho Los Amigos. His private practice was in Santa Monica where he served on staff at Santa Monica and St. John??s Hospitals. Dr. Hester had a special interest in Cerebral Palsy and was active in the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy. Don swam for the Beverly Hills High School and Stanford University swim teams, winning many races at both state and national levels. He was a proud member of LA County Lifeguards, saving many lives on LA beaches during his college years. In later years, he swam in US Masters Swimming competitions, and completed the Maui Channel Swim two times as part of a relay team, once in 1983 and again with his sons in 2000. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary; sons, James, Peter and Thomas; their mother, Myra Chalfant; daughters-in-law Jona, Lisa and Nazhat; and grandchildren Zuleikha, Michael and Melissa Hester. A memorial service will be held at Brentwood Presbyterian Church, 12000 San Vicente Blvd, Los Angeles, California, 40049, 310-826-5656 at 2:00 PM, January 12, 2012. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Brentwood Presbyterian Church or United Cerebral Palsy: 6430 Independence Avenue, Woodland Hills, CA. 91367.
