Fern Wallace Obituary

July 13, 1925 - October 2, 2016 Fern Wallace passed away peacefully at home after living a full 91 years. A wonderful, caring, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Fern was a vibrant, beautiful, caring person known for her exquisite taste, intelligence, wit, hostess par excellence and philanthropy. Born in Los Angeles to Erwin and Edith Wixen, she attended Manual Arts High School and UCLA. In 1944, she met Leon Wallace MD, who became a much admired and respected cardiologist in Los Angeles, and their beautiful, loving marriage lasted 64 years until his passing in 2009. Fern used her boundless energy to support many charities, including the Music Center (Club 100, Center Theater Group), Fellows of Contemporary Art, CASA (Child Advocacy Program at the Los Angeles courts), Los Angeles County Art Museum (East Asian Art Council, Modern and Contemporary Art Council), and the Fowler Museum. She helped the Art Rental Gallery for emerging artists at the Armand Hammer Museum. Fern is survived by her daughter Laura (and granddaughter Gillian Wallace Horvat), and son Daniel (Janice) Wallace MD (children Phillip, Sarah and Naomi and grandchildren Sam and Liam), as well her brother Burt Wixen MD. Services will be held at Hillside Cemetery. Contributions can be made in her memory to the Fellows of Contemporary Art or Center Theater Group.
