Remembering you with love Uncle Charlie. Re-reading tributes from the past is a tender & touching pause to consider how things have changed, who has since joined you and knowing we will all be together again. Louise

Ifirst met Charlie on Easter 1959 when Helmut and I came to McAdoo to see Ilse, Charlie, Inge and Monica. It was a lovely visit - Inge and I shared a bedroom, Ilse decorated Easter eggs and we all laughed when Monica announced that Charlie (her father ) was playing "chest" with Inge. What I remember from that and subsequent visits was Charlie's good nature and his smile.
However there is one particular moment which I shall never forget. It was Christmas 1960 and Litzi was arriving from Germany and Helmut and I were going to travel down to Pennsylvania tp meet her and spend Christmas with the family.
We were going to travel by train (train travel was still very popular then). We left Toronto late afternoon on Deccember 22nd. We were to change trains in Buffalo N.Y. and arrive in Wilkes Barre in the evening of that same day.
I could write the great American novel about what happened to us from the beginning of that journey. It was starting to snow when we left Toronto. The train was crowded with people standing in the aisle. After a time it was obvious that we were proceeding very slowly and it became obvious to everyone that this snowfall was turning into a blizzard.
I wont go into the whole Odyssey. Suffice it to say that we got to Buffalo but not to the station. By that time it was 2 A.M.
What happened to us in Buffalo is part of the aforementioned GAN. but trying to get out was more difficult than getting in.
No trains, no buses, no airplanes..
We finally left Buffalo by a train that they said "might be going to Pennsylvania It left at 6;30p.m. It was still snowing and we felt that we were crawling. About the only good thing on that journey (there was no food or hot drinks) but a few hours on a womans voice announced that it was Christmas Day and we all started singing "Silent Night".
At about 3.30A.M. we heard the aannouncement that we were arriving at Wilkes Barre. I think that Helmut and I were the only people to get off. It was bitterly cold and the station was obviously closed but"what to our wondering eyes did appear"
but a patient, tired and frozen Charlie. He must have been waitung a long, long time but he gave us such a big, warm welcoming smile and took us home to McAdoo.
We have never forgotten that journey but most of all we have never forgotten Charlie being there and his wonderful smile. It has always been one of our fondest memories and we have shared it with Louise and Anne on quite few occasions

I feel very lucky to have you as my Uncle, and even luckier to have you as my Godfather. You were a good and kind person here on earth, and I know you are at peace up in Heaven. My memories of you are from when I was little, but they are all very good memories.
Love from your niece,
Marcia Hellmuth
