George Barrett Obituary

March 9, 1928 - April 24, 2014 George Barker Barrett Jr., born on May 9th, 1928 died on April 24, 2014. A Renaissance gentleman, George had a very adventurous spirit and was an extremely resourceful person. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, George moved with his family to Santa Barbara, California where he attended and graduated from The Cate School. Later in life, George served on the Board of Trustees of The Cate School and was honored with the The Cate School Distinguished Alum Award. George then attended and graduated from Yale University. After 2 years at Yale, George enlisted in the Army, trained and served his country overseas during the Occupation of Japan under General MacArthur. Upon returning to and graduating from Yale, George continued his military service as a lieutenant in the Air Force, stationed in New Jersey. After his service, George learned to fly, worked for Lockheed Corporation testing planes, the world over - from Mexico to Alaska. An accomplished businessman, George's career included his heading a manufacturing company, and owning and operating both a construction and ladder company. Additionally, George, was an avid horseman who was a member of Rancheros and he served as President of Santa Anita Racetrack. George married Jane Barrett in 1982. They embarked on a grand lifetime adventure, filled with extensive worldwide travel, sailing on their cherished 'ZEE-JANE' sailboat and enjoying family and friends from port to port. What a wonderful life they shared together! George put his sailing expertise to work when he successfully navigated a Trans-Atlantic sailing adventure from the coast of Spain to Barbados. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Jane Barrett, and by his 11 grandchildren, 6 children and 2 sisters. George contributed greatly to the lives of his 3 step-children and 9 step-grand-children - all of whom loved George very much. The family will miss George greatly. In honor of George - best known by friends and family by this endearing sign-off- we fondly and respectfully say , in his memory ... ' YAY' .

So happy George was able to spend his peaceful and happy last 6 months with his children Marnie, Elizabeth and George III, and sisters Betsy and Cynthia at his home in Santa Barbara. He seemed so happy to be there amongst friends and in the family home. What a wonderful man, and such lovely children.
