December 19, 1925 - September 17, 2012
A resident of Encino, Irwin died of natural causes in the presence of loved ones. A Los Angeles native, he graduated from Los Angeles High and UCLA where he met Barbara, the love of his life, in a chemistry lab. Medical school at UCSF (Class of '49) was followed by internship at LA County General Hospital. His Dermatology residency was at the Westwood VA-UCLA program where he continued a decades-long association on the volunteer faculty. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954-56 at the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton. Irwin enjoyed numerous lifelong professional and personal friendships. He opened his dermatology practice in the San Fernando Valley which still thrives after more than 57 years. A dedicated doctor, he was revered by patients and admired by colleagues. His active life included water skiing at Lake Arrowhead, tennis, bridge, gardening, and knitting. He particularly enjoyed the cultivation of orchids and was involved with the San Fernando Valley Orchid Society and the Huntington Botanical Gardens. Irwin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; five children (Charles, Margo, Ken, Amy, and Greg); eight grandchildren, and one new great granddaughter. We all miss him terribly.
